Can the Addiction Be Cured?
When a young adult successfully completed the 90 day program it is easy for friends and family to suggest that the young person has been cured. Unfortunately there is no cure for addictions, but the client will have learned new techniques that will be really useful to help themselves avoid relapse. They are taught to understand and accept to rely on the therapies that have been provided for them here to support them when they feel they are becoming susceptible to giving in to the addiction again.
The 2 primary programs are funded through Alberta Health Services. The 90 Day Young Adult Treatment Program is free for all clients who are Alberta residents. But the 42 Day Program has a fee of $40.00 per day attached to it for Alberta residents. Financial support for the 42 Day Program may be obtained through Child and Family Services of Alberta (CFSA), Alberta Works (SFI), Alberta Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Employers, Employee Assistance Programs, First Nations funding and individuals.

For Parents – Why is my Young Adult at Risk?
Many parents and guardians often blame themselves when their young adults develop drug addictions. We have learned that the most successful treatment plans begins by addressing the addiction without attaching blame. Addiction can develop at any during the human life cycle and is a result of many issues. There are as many different addictions as there are issues, for example we address gambling and sexual addictions along with drugs and alcohol.
However, there seem to be an increasing number of young people getting caught up in drug and alcohol addictions and need to seek help and support to help them regain a healthier lifestyle. For some and is most often the case today, peer pressure can cause them to try substances in order to fit in. This pressure often begins in early childhood where children start by daring each other or trying to prove that they are more grown- up than the rest of the group.
Unfortunately, most children do not have the knowledge or understanding that such activities can create serious and dangerous lifelong dependencie. Our experience and professional training in the field of addictions has led us to the understanding that there are often many reasons why young people seem to be at risk of developing an addiction and becoming addicts that can arise from many areas.
Some develop from what appears to be nothing more than innocent activities that are enjoyed by friends and family. There are other reasons to consider such as pressures from peers that can induce young people to try different substances just to prove to others that they can fit in and should be accepted into the group. For some, the explanation may be that they have grown-up in a household where substance abuse occurs frequently and as a result drugs and alcohol are easy to get and they may be encouraged to become a part of the activities that surround substance abuse.
The professionally trained staff at Poundmakers Lodge Treatment Centres (PLTC) has the skills, education, training, knowledge and tools to help addicts turn their lives around to the degree that many of them who have passed through here now lead healthy productive and happy lives with their families and friends. Staff members attribute this success to the holistic approach that is applied to each client who comes here for treatment.
